Sri Lanka defeated India by two wickets and with just four deliveries to spare, to top the points table of Asia Cup, in Fatullah on Friday.
Chasing 265 for a win, Kumar Sangakkara (103 off 84) helped his team go past the finish line despite repeated strikes by Ravindra Jadeja (3/30) at the other end.
Sri Lanka received a solid start from openers as Kusal Perera (64) and Lahiru Thirimanne (38) put on an 80-run stand. The two hit four boundaries each to keep the score ticking at a decent pace before Ravichandran Ashwin dislodged both in quick succession.
In walked Sangakkara and anchored himself at one end. He resisted India's spinners and seamers with poise to move the chase forward. The twist in the tale came in the 32nd over when Ravindra Jadeja struck from the other end - dismissing veteran Mahela Jayawardene (9) before he could set his eyes in.
The spinner made it two in two when he bowled Dinesh Chandimal off the very next delivery to bring India back into the match.
The flurry of wickets in the middle-order continued as Mohammad Shami matched Jadeja's exploits - dismissing Angelo Matthews (6) and Sachitra Senanayake (12) to leave Sri Lanka wobbling at 183/6 in 36.2. Sri Lanka fans however did not lose hope as Sangakkara continued his resistance from the other end.
The 36-year-old waited till the slog overs before he unleashed himself - hitting boundaries at will. He targeted Bhuvneshwar Kumar specifically as he hit shots all around the park, leaving India skipper Virat Kohli frustrated. Indian fielders too were generous in providing escape routes.
There were plenty of dropped catches through the course of Sri Lanka's innings with even wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik making a mess of a stumping chance to get rid of Sangakkara who was then on 30.
He did eventually fall in the 49th over but the tailenders ensured his efforts did not go in vain.
Earlier in the day, Shikhar Dhawan hit 94 to help India to 269/9. In what could have been a daunting total - one closer to the 300-run mark, Dhawan's innings proved to be the only one of substance before Ajnatha Mendis (4/60) and Senanayake (3/41) staged a massive collapse. - NDTV
